origin of  place

When one has the ability to pause within their own life, step back and examine the small and daily good, one becomes inherently linked to their immediate environment and the ordinary. A moment that holds such beauty becomes imprinted in one’s memory, providing a place of refuge and silence along the way through life’s long journey. When moment’s of difficulty and strife arise in one’s life, such a refuge becomes a ground of stability and support only cementing the significance of these brief but profound memories. Origin of Place is an investigation into these quiet spaces and the innate interdependence they have to one’s own capacity for finding beauty in the unexceptional.

This project was inspired by the desire to capture the still and fleeting beauty in daily life and a personal reverence for analog 35mm photography. This work evolved out of a daily practice of taking two to four 35mm photographs a day that stood to represent a small beautiful moment in a busy and fast-paced life. Each photograph was taken with the same type of film, camera and lens for the duration of a year. The body of work contains around 1200 printed 4x6 color photographs that are neither edited, cropped nor retouched. The images have been meticulously catalogued into a series of notebooks that are organized by the season and divided by the month. Each month holds an index where the title and location of the photograph has been recorded. Above are a selection of images from the body of work and examples of the notebooks used to organize them.
